A Word About Anxiety

Living in globally unprecedented times has wrought worldwide disastrous statistics regarding anxiety, depression and suicide, bringing heavy hearts to those of us in the “helping professions.”

Definition
Anxiety is generally described as feeling worried, nervous, unease; usually because of an upcoming event or uncertain outcome. This is a normal emotion, it is your brain’s way of reacting to stress and alerting you of potential danger ahead.

3-3-3 rule for Anxiety
If your body is reacting to anxiety coming on,

1 – Take a pause and deep breath
2 – Look all around you
3 – Focus your vision & name 3 things you can see in your environment

However, and this is very important, If your anxiety level is excessive, you need to consult a doctor immediately.

Some suggestions:
– Talk to a trusted friend. Do not be embarrassed. Sharing your thoughts and feelings can be a very effective release valve.
– Get Moving! The last thing on your mind is exercise, but it is one of the best natural answers (raises endorphins and serotonin levels to help you feel better emotionally). In nature is the best, but any type of movement is good (walking, dancing, biking, swimming, other sports).
– Get Sleep. Everybody needs sleep to function properly. Lack of sleep drains your mental abilities and puts your physical health at risk and can lead to weight gain and weakened immune system. Develop a bedtime routine (read a book or do something relaxing before bed). This leads to a better morning.
-Do something creative. Pick up an old hobby, or develop a new one (photography, woodworking, cooking, gardening, fiber arts crafts, etc).
– Humor. Find something that makes you smile (movie, youtube, amusing anecdotes, etc.).
– Caffeine. Jolts the nervous system and boosts energy. It’s all about moderation.
– Food. Incorporate proteins, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats into your diet. Limit your intake of sugar and refined carbs.
– Alcohol or drug use can cause or worsen anxiety. Quitting can also make you more anxious. Find a doctor or support group to help.
– Saying no. Don’t overwhelm yourself with everyone’s problems. You need energy for yourself, just know your limitations
– You can’t change the past & you don’t control the future. You can be proactive and head off problems, just don’t focus too much on what has been and what will be.

Ultimately
Jesus is the answer. Talk to Him. Read his wisdom in the Bible. These verses will get you started: I Peter 5:7; Luke 12:25; John 14:27; Proverbs 12:25; Matthew 6:26

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it fear” John 14:27
