Skyrim
An open-world, action, role-play video game, Skyrim’s story revolves around the Dragonborn who are on a quest to defeat Alduin, the World-Eater dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world.
Set 200 years after Oblivion strikes Skyrim, players complete quests and develop character by improving skills, while having the ability to travel anywhere in the game world, at any time, or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

J. Credence: I may end up creating an entire category for the “Philosophy of Theology and Humankind,” but I’m starting here. The video, Why You Keep Returning to Skyrim, when watched with a Biblical Worldview is fascinating. (https://youtu.be/R_VzjFWrF6o)
Especially in American culture we tend so much to forget that we have impact, purpose and meaning on our life. This world and others, because scientism, has so minimized how impactful we are as human beings. This YouTube creator hits the ball out of the park on reminding us how often video games get this philosophy correct, but we forget it in our everyday life. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did.
CJ Austin: I am not a gamer, but I found this video very fascinating and thought provoking as he explores the profane and the sacred. And, the scenery is beautiful!
Profane, in the theological sense, is showing no respect for a god or religion. The narrator invites the listener to examine the meaning of life – why we are here? What should we be doing? Although not coming from a recognized christian world view, we need answers for ourselves & to share with others who are floundering in life.
J. Credence: Our culture leans so heavily into this profanity that it’s easy to slip into the mundane drudgery of life and forget… purpose, meaning, intentionality and so much more. This means when I get up in the morning and set my feet on the ground I have value, I can impact my kids’ lives, my husband’s, my extended family, neighbors, friends… It has meaning. Solomon was so caught up in the profane: Ecclesiastes 1:1-11.
CJ Austin: We get a perspective on the age we are living in by taking a look at the decades of thinking that have inspired & influenced our culture. We have been inoculated with “relativism” or “social constructionism,” whereby we are taught there is no one truth – everybody’s opinion is equal & everybody gets to decide what truth is for themselves. What an insipid, clever way to gradually sway people from God, from whom all truth flows.
In the name of “humanism” (which sounds deceptive humane), the reality of God is replaced by humans at the center. Absolute truth, which mankind has shunned, necessitates the existence of an ultimate authority which fallen man does not want. If truth exists in an original form, then it didn’t evolve from something else – it has a source & the source is God.
When the truth of God and His absolute truth is denied and lost, anarchy is inevitable. And that is where our culture is – floundering, looking for meaning, without wanting to humbly acknowledge there is a Superior Being, from whom all truth flows.
We are now in a post, post-modern world in which man will either turn back to true Truth, or further descend into chaos. If culture survives, our descendants will look at this period of time as epochal upheaval, similar to moving from the agricultural to industrial age; albeit much more cataclysmic as this is a spiritual battle. And I believe this is what the video is portraying. What will mankind choose?
