Facing the New Year

The pandemic of 2020 and 2021, with all its uncertainties for the future, can make setting goals and resolutions feel pointless. Set that aside, and instead, with hope, focus on opportunities. This will encourage your belief in your ability to take action to improve yourself and your situation. Here are some tips to help you.

Choose What Really Matters
Ask if you really want to make that change – do you have a strong “why.” Having a strong compelling reason will help you stick with it when you are unmotivated and tired.

Pick Just One or Two
It’s easier to remember and implement and will increase your likelihood of being successful. Start with a short term goal, success will snowball into long term positives for your life.

Commit to a Specific Action
From your general concept of what you want to change, pick a practical action you can take and enter into your calendar / planner. Choosing your action makes it simpler for you to stick with it.

Make it Easy
Pick a goal that will be satisfying with obvious results; one that you will struggle least with. Think what you most want to see in your life and how you can lessen your resistance, and add resistance to what you want to avoid.

Track Your Progress
Use paper/digital planner/calendar or tracking app to record initial status and goals. This helps you stay focused and consistent rather than trying to hold everything in your head.

Get Support
It is a given that your enthusiasm will wane. Consider getting an accountability partner for those times when you just don’t have it in you to make the right choices. Knowing others care and are working on making good choices is an important motivator.

Hope for the Future
There is always hope for positive change regardless of what is going on in the world around you.
